What is Gonorrhoea:

Gonorrhoea is on the rise, with a recent clinical study showing an increase of 30% over the last 3 years. Gonorrhoea is caused by the bacteria ‘Neisseria gonorrhoeae’, which can infect the mucous membranes of the urethra, vagina, penis, anus, mouth, throat, and/or eyes. If the infection spreads to the uterus or fallopian tubes, it can cause pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility, and ectopic pregnancy. In rare cases, the infection can be spread to the blood, resulting in a condition known as disseminated gonococcal infection (DGI), characterized by arthritis and joint pain, fever and chills, and dermatitis. Additionally, during childbirth, it can be transmitted, potentially leading to serious eye infections in babies.

Symptoms start to show up after a week of infection. It can vary from person to person. Some people may not show any symptoms.

Symptoms in Men include:

• Frequent Urination
• A pus-like discharge from the penis
• Swelling or redness at the opening of the penis
• Swelling or pain in the testicles
• A persistent sore throat

Symptoms in Women include:

• Discharge from the vagina
• When urinating experiencing pain or burning
• Tendency to urinate frequently
• Heavier periods or spotting
• Painful sexual intercourse
• Sharp pain in the lower abdomen
• Sore throat
• Fever

What is Chlamydia:

Chlamydia is the most common STI/STD in the UK and the easiest infection to pass on during sexual intercourse. Chlamydia is caused by bacteria called Chlamydia trachomatis.  Men can get it in their urethra or rectum. And, in both men and women, it can cause conjunctivitis, an eye infection. Women get the infection in their cervix, urethra, or rectum, chlamydia can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease (an infection in the uterus, ovaries, or fallopian tubes), tubal (ectopic) pregnancies, and infertility. If passed on to a baby, it can cause eye infections or pneumonia. Most of the times, those with chlamydia show no symptoms and are unaware they are infected.

Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea testing is important because they are both treatable with antibiotics or antibiotic injections. Sexual Health Clinics also called Genitourinary Medicine (GUM) and Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) Services will ensure that you receive the correct treatment. Refraining from sexual activity until you no longer have the infection. Previous successful treatment does not make you immune to catching it again. Practising safe sex protects against unintended pregnancy and common STIs, such as, Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea.
